The two men who would lead Vietnam’s decades-long struggle for independence, first against the French and then against the Americans, pose together after the August Revolution, September 1945. At left is Gen. Vo Nguyen Giap, the principal military commander and strategist. At right is Ho Chi Minh, a founder of the Vietnamese Communist Party who would become president of North Vietnam.
